J. Robert Oppenheimer
J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was born into a wealthy Jewish family in New York. His early education was at the Ethical Culture School in New York.
Oppenheimer graduated from Harvard in 1925 and studied at Cambridge University. He then went to Germany and obtained his Ph.D. In 1929, he returned to the U.S. and taught at Berkeley and Cal Tech.

In 1939, the U.S. learned that the Nazis were developing atomic weapons. President Roosevelt took action and formed the Manhattan Project in 1942. Oppenheimer was appointed as the director.
